Directions
Before you read: Show children the cover, and read the title and author’s name. Ask, What do you think the girl is doing? Ask, What do you think a listening walk is? What do you think the girl will do on a listening walk? What do you think she might hear?
As you read: You may want to read the book straight through once. On a second reading ask:
- Why do you think the girl and her father don’t talk on their listening walk?
- How does this help them to listen?
After you read: Ask, What were some of the sounds the girl hears on her listening walk? Do you remember what place the girl thought was really noisy? Why did she think that? Do you remember the place the girl said was quiet? Why did she think that? What did she hear in this quiet place? If children need help remembering, go through the book page-by-page. Make a chart of the sounds in the book and the objects that made the sounds.
