Read and Discuss: Samantha on a Roll

Samantha goes down a steep hill on her roller skates.

Materials

  • Samantha on a Roll by Linda Ashman

Key Science Concepts

  • Both rolling and sliding objects move faster down steeper inclines.
  • When a stationary object is hit by a rolling or sliding object, the force may knock the object over or cause it to move depending on how fast the moving object is going and how heavy it is.

Directions

Before you read: Show children the cover, and read the title and author’s name. Ask, What is happening on the cover? What is Samantha wearing on her feet? What do you see on the bottom of the skates? (wheels) Has anyone tried roller-skating? What was it like?

As you read: Pause when Samantha gets to the top of Hawthorn Hill. Ask, What do you think might happen now that Samantha is on the top of the hill?

After you read: Ask:

  • Do you think Samantha knew she was going to go so fast down the hill?
  • What was it about the hill that made her go fast?
  • What happened when Samantha bumped into the bride and the marching band?
  • Why couldn’t Samantha stop?  How did she finally stop?
  • Would you want to go roller-skating down a steep hill like the one in the story? Why or why not?
