Ask children to compare this afternoon’s activity, “Ramps with Different Surfaces,” with what the children in the video they watched this morning did. How were their experiences the same? How were they different?
Display the photos from the outdoor exploration. Encourage children to dictate words to go with the photos, explaining what they did, what they observed, what they discovered. You can post the photo essay on your wall or bind it into a book.
Review the “Different Surfaces and Objects” chart together. Ask:
- What surfaces seem better for rolling objects farther or faster?
- Are those surfaces good for rolling ALL objects, or just some objects? Why do you think some objects roll better than others?
- Do you think it matters how steep the hill or sidewalk is? Do you think some things might roll down a steep grassy hill but not a gentle grassy hill? Why?
- What do you think the difference would be if you rolled something down a grassy hill before and after the grass on the hill was mowed? How might mowing the grass change how something rolled?
