Art Center

Create art using shadows, lamps, and flashlights.

Materials

  • art supplies (pencils, crayons, markers, paper, and clipboards)
  • printer paper and construction paper
  • scissors
  • glue, paste, and tape
  • desk lamp
  • flashlight

Directions

Encourage children to draw shadows or paint shadow silhouettes inspired by:

  • this week’s activities
  • videos and books from Morning Circle
  • shadows they see outside, on the playground, or at home
  • shadows made by objects indoors
  • shadows they made using their hands or their bodies
  • shadows created using flashlights or lamps

You can also have children decorate any shadow tracings they have made. While they do this, have them think about what their shadows tracings don’t show about the object that it belongs to. What details (like eyes, hair, clothing, etc.) can they add to their shadow tracings to transform them or make them more interesting?
