Sing Loud and Soft, High and Low

Sing in lots of different ways.

Materials

  • chart paper
  • marker

Key Science Concepts

  • Sounds can vary in volume (loud and soft), and pitch (high and low).

Vocabulary

Tell children that volume has to do with how loud or soft a sound is. Tell them that the words quiet and soft mean the same thing. Tell children that pitch has to do with how high or low a sound is. Model the sounds for them.

Directions

Have children sing along with you as you make your voice increasingly louder, softer, higher or lower. Tell children to sing each line after you, changing their voices as you do. Repeat a few times, until it is clear that children are imitating what you’re doing.

  • Can you sing loud, louder, louder, LOUDER!?
  • Can you sing soft, softer, softer, softer, softer?
  • Can you sing high, higher, higher, HIGHER!?
  • Can you sing low, lower, lower, lower?!

Reflect and Share

Create a T-Chart titled “Volume: Loud/Quiet.” Model some loud and quiet sounds for them, and have them imitate you.

Go around the group, asking children to make either a loud or quiet sound. Have the group say whether it’s loud or quiet and put a check in the appropriate column. Then ask,

  • How do you think a sound can change from loud to soft?
  • What do you do to make your voice soft? Loud?
  • How might you change a soft sound to a loud one?

Create a second T-Chart titled Pitch: High/Low. Model high and low sounds for them, and ask them to imitate you. Then go around the group, asking them to make a high or low sound. Have the group identify whether it’s a high or low sound, and put a check in the appropriate column.
