Hatching new scientists every day!

Art Center

Create pictures of the different bodies of water you’re exploring this week.

Materials

  • art supplies (pencils, crayons, markers, water colors, paints)
  • printer paper and/or construction paper
  • scissors
  • glue, paste, and tape
  • photos or illustrations of bodies of water from books, magazines, or downloaded from the Internet (puddles, streams, rivers, lakes, oceans, and waterfalls); hang these around the Art Center or display them in loose-leaf binders
  • balls of blue yarn, blue wrapping paper, and/or blue cellophane wrap

Directions

Point out the images of bodies of water you’ve displayed and encourage children to draw pictures of them. Suggest they make collages or 3-D constructions of oceans, waterfalls, etc., using yarn, wrapping paper, or cellophane.

Extension

If children continue to show an interest in drawing or painting different bodies of water, you may want to hang a long piece of mural paper on the wall and have children use paints to create a scene of rivers, lakes, ponds, and oceans.
