Watch and Discuss: Shadow Puppets

Children make shadow puppets and put on a play for their friends.

Materials

  • Shadow Puppets (video)

Key Science Concepts

  • A shadow is created by an object blocking the light.
  • You can make shadows with your body and other objects.
  • Shadows grow bigger and fuzzier as the object moves closer to the light source, and smaller and sharper as the object moves farther away.

Directions

Before watching: Tell children that they are going to watch a video of children experimenting with shadows. These children also make shadow puppets and put on plays, just like they have done.

After watching: Ask,

  • What did the children use to make their shadow puppets? How is what they did similar to what you’ve done?
  • The children used a yellow sheet for their shadow theater. What do you think would happen if they used a thick blanket instead of a thin yellow sheet?
