Observing the Night Moon

Activities: Next Activity

Take time to observe the moon with your child. Viewing the moon over successive nights, and seeing how it appears to change shape over time, is both educational and great fun!

Check the newspaper to see if the moon will be visible in the early evening. Then, find a comfortable spot where you have a good view of the night sky. Invite your child to look for the moon and talk about its shape. What does it look like? Is it big and round? What are the markings like? Have your child draw a picture.

Observe the moon on different nights and compare its shape as time goes by. Does the part of the moon you can see seem to be getting smaller or bigger? Invite your child to make up a story about what's happening to the moon.
